Editorial Guidelines

Kepes Journal, Visual Design Study Group (ISSN 1794-7111) is published by the Department of Visual Design at Universidad de Caldas. This editorial project originated in the reflective and research results provided by the department professors who, gathered in the "Visual Design studies Group", gave shape to the publication. The name KEPES arises from  the intention to recognize the contributions of one of the most outstanding characters in the field of design research, image and perception, namely the Hungarian Gyorgy Kepes (1906-2001).

The manifest concern to confront the concepts of design, image, communication and creation with the achievements in this context has led to consider the need to generate stable academic communities to allow the exchange of ideas in order to address responsibly the challenges of this discipline. In this sense KEPES Journal is proposed on a scenario framed in the lineaments of scientific nature, research dissemination and reflections underway in various national and international academic institutions, and whose target audience is made up of students, professionals and academics involved in the areas of design, communication, image, and  interactive creation, among others.

Since its first edition in 2004, KEPES Journal has fostered the transmission of the results obtained by the Department of Visual Design in the areas of teaching, research and university projection. Among the proposed objectives, since its publication started, are:

• To disseminate research results related to the history, theory and contemporary visions of design, image creation and communication. Present a critical overview of the dynamics of design both nationally and internationally.

• To publish original and unpublished reflection, research and review articles which have undergone the double-blind peer evaluation process which guarantees the quality of the applications. To provide the design academic community with a publication committed with the scientific nature standards required by research.

KEPES Journal’s holds as fundamental  to share and disseminate knowledge generated around the discipline of design and related areas, reason why,  parallel to the distribution of the printed version,  provides access to its content through the Web site: http://kepes.ucaldas.edu.co.

Publishing editorial policy

KEPES Journal is an editorial project issued every six months, mainly published in Spanish and English. It receives applications permanently, which means that the contents and indexes are set from the dates of receipt and review of postulated documents. The Journal receives original unpublished articles that correspond to categories nationally and internationally accepted as research products: scientific and technological research articles, reflection articles and review articles. It also admits other nominations such as short articles, case reports, topic reviews and reflection articles not derived from research.

For funding the Journal receives resources from the Research and Graduate Studies Vice-rector’s Office, and from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at Universidad de Caldas.

For authors

The Journal reserves printing rights, total or partial reproduction of the material as well as the right to accept or reject the nominations and to make any changes it deems appropriate. In all cases, authors will receive information on the findings and suggestions of the evaluators.

By postulating the articles, the authors acknowledge and accept the rules governing the publication.

All articles submitted will be initially subject to consideration by the Editorial Committee, in order to determine whether article topic applies to the Journal and meets the minimum essential requirements for peer evaluation: originality, completeness, timeliness. The Editorial Board members will not know the names of the authors of the article. After this initial evaluation, the article will be subject to evaluation by two qualified evaluators for this purpose. To ensure objectivity and confidentiality between authors and reviewers, the ‘double-blind' method is used.

For submitting their work, authors must attach to the article a letter addressed to the Journal Editor in digital form, their CV resume, and the copyright transfer formproperly completed and signed.

Proof must be left in the transfer of rights that, among other things, the article has not been submitted to other journals or organs of dissemination.  The author acquires the commitment to transfer communication and text distribution and visual material patrimonial rights of the article to Universidad de Caldas for the issue in which the article will be published.  Also the author is committed to give the publication credits to the Journal when making further use of published material.

Only those people who have contributed intellectually to the development of the work should be included in the list of signing authors. Having helped in the collection of data or participated in any technique are not, by themselves, sufficient criteria for authorship. Because of the Journal’s interest in disseminating research results, it is considered that the authors should accredit graduate studies.  However, people holding undergraduate degree or students from research hotbeds who have participated in the development of research projects, may submit reflection products.

The Journal disclaims any responsibility for possible conflicts arising from the authorship of the works published.

The Journal adheres to the guidelines or COPE: Code of Conduct publicationethics.org/files/ code_of_conduct_for_journal_editors-Mar11. Pdf

Conflict of interests

The Journal expects authors to declare any commercial association that might pose a conflict of interest in connection with the submitted article.

Peer evaluation

The result of the study by the Editorial Committee shall be informed to the authors, and it will specify whether the application is consistent with the nature of the Journal.

The result of the evaluation by peer reviewers will be released to the authors, as well as rejected, accepted with suggestions or without suggestions applications. In cases of approval with suggestions, the author must expressly state his willingness to continue the process, which means conforming to the specific time for publication.

In cases in which, in the process of evaluating the same article, contradictory results arise, the document will be forwarded to a third evaluator or one of the members of the Editorial Committee. Their evaluative considerations will help determine whether the article is or is not published.
